PUWER Risk Assessment & UKCA Compliance Training

Practical training for engineers, managers and safety professionals responsible for machinery safety and compliance.

Our PUWER Risk Assessment Training provides practical guidance on assessing machinery and work equipment against the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and relevant UK machinery safety requirements. Learn how to identify machinery hazards, assess risk, evaluate guarding and safety controls, document findings and understand the relationship between PUWER compliance, machinery risk assessment and UKCA requirements. Designed around real workplace applications, the course gives you a structured approach that can be applied to existing machinery, new equipment and workplace risk assessments.

What You'll Learn

Develop the practical skills to assess machinery, identify hazards and apply PUWER and UKCA requirements with confidence in real workplace environments.

Develop a practical understanding of PUWER risk assessment and UKCA compliance and learn how to apply the requirements to real machinery and work equipment. You’ll learn how to identify hazards, evaluate risk, assess guarding and safety controls, review emergency stops and isolation, document findings, and determine the actions needed to improve machinery safety and PUWER compliance.

FAQ

  • 1. What is PUWER Risk Assessment Training?

PUWER Risk Assessment Training teaches delegates how to assess machinery and work equipment against the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). The course covers hazard identification, risk assessment, guarding, safety controls, isolation, emergency stops and the documentation needed to demonstrate effective machinery safety management.

  • 2. Who should take this PUWER training course?

The course is suitable for engineers, maintenance personnel, health and safety professionals, supervisors, managers and anyone responsible for assessing, purchasing, installing, modifying or maintaining machinery and work equipment.

  • 3. What will I learn on the course?

You will learn how to identify machinery hazards, carry out structured risk assessments, evaluate guarding and safety devices, review emergency stops and isolation arrangements, identify appropriate control measures and document your findings. The course also explains the relationship between PUWER and machinery conformity requirements.

  • 4. What is a PUWER risk assessment?

A PUWER risk assessment is a systematic assessment of work equipment to determine whether it can be used safely. It considers hazards associated with operation, maintenance, cleaning and foreseeable misuse, together with guarding, controls, isolation, inspection, competence and other risk-control measures.

  • 5. Does PUWER apply to existing and older machinery?

Yes. PUWER can apply to existing work equipment as well as newer machinery. An older machine is not automatically unsafe simply because of its age, but employers must ensure that work equipment provided for use at work is suitable, properly maintained and appropriately controlled in accordance with applicable PUWER requirements.

  • 6. Is UKCA marking the same as PUWER compliance?

No. They address different legal responsibilities. Product conformity requirements concern matters such as placing relevant machinery or products on the market or putting them into service, whereas PUWER concerns the safe provision and use of work equipment in the workplace. A conformity mark does not, by itself, demonstrate that an employer has satisfied all of its PUWER duties.

  • 7. Does completing this course make someone competent to carry out PUWER assessments?

The course develops knowledge and practical understanding of PUWER risk assessment, but competence also depends on factors such as an individual's training, technical knowledge, experience and familiarity with the equipment being assessed. More complex or specialist machinery may require additional engineering or technical expertise.

  • 8. Will I receive a certificate after completing the course?

Yes. Delegates who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a certificate of completion from NDC Certification Bureau Ltd, providing evidence of the training undertaken.
