Online Asbestos Awareness Training for UK Workers

Our online Asbestos Awareness Course is designed for workers who may encounter asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during their normal work activities, including those working in construction, building maintenance, facilities management, refurbishment and related trades. The course explains the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, where asbestos may be found in buildings, how to recognise potential ACMs and the precautions workers should take to avoid disturbing them. Training has been developed with reference to the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and relevant HSE guidance, helping employers provide appropriate asbestos awareness information, instruction and training for workers who may foreseeably encounter asbestos.

Asbestos Awareness Course – Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who needs asbestos awareness training in the UK?

Asbestos awareness training is appropriate for workers who may encounter or accidentally disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during their work. This can include construction workers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, decorators, maintenance engineers, facilities staff and other trades working on the fabric of buildings where asbestos may be present. The training is intended to help workers recognise the risks and avoid disturbing suspected asbestos.

  • Is asbestos awareness training a legal requirement?

Under Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, employers must ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is provided to employees who are liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees. Asbestos awareness training can form part of meeting this requirement for workers who may foreseeably encounter asbestos but are not carrying out work on asbestos-containing materials.

  • Can asbestos awareness training be completed online?

Yes. Asbestos awareness training can be delivered through e-learning where this provides workers with the appropriate information and understanding for their role. Our online Asbestos Awareness Course allows learners to complete the training remotely and covers asbestos health risks, common asbestos-containing materials, where asbestos may be found, safe working principles and what to do if asbestos is discovered or accidentally disturbed.

  • How often should asbestos awareness training be refreshed?

There is no legal requirement for formal asbestos awareness training to be repeated every 12 months. HSE guidance recommends that awareness is refreshed as necessary to maintain workers' knowledge and help prevent exposure. The appropriate frequency should take account of the worker's role, competence, training needs and any changes in their work or working environment.

  • What does an asbestos awareness course cover?

Our Asbestos Awareness Course introduces learners to the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, common types of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), where asbestos may be found in buildings, how exposure can occur and the precautions workers should take. It also explains what to do if suspected asbestos is discovered or accidentally disturbed and introduces the key requirements of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

  • Do I receive an asbestos awareness certificate?

Yes. Learners who successfully complete the online Asbestos Awareness Course and required assessment receive a certificate of completion. The certificate provides evidence that the learner has completed the training, but asbestos awareness training does not qualify a person to undertake licensed or non-licensed work with asbestos.
